Today's Storm Prediction Center (SPC) Risk Matrix
Standardized 5-tier convective threat levels for today's severe storm outlook
The NOAA Storm Prediction Center issues Day 1 Convective Outlooks classifying severe weather risk into five calibrated threat levels based on atmospheric instability, wind shear, and moisture return:
Isolated severe storms; short-lived, low-end tornado threat.
Scattered severe storms expected; a few tornadoes possible.
Numerous severe storms likely; multiple tornadoes and large hail.
Widespread severe storms likely; long-track, strong tornadoes expected.
Severe weather outbreak; violent (EF4/EF5) tornadoes highly probable.
What to Do Today During an Active Warning
Immediate life-safety protocols if your area is under a warning today
Move immediately to an interior room on the lowest floor of a sturdy building (basement, storm shelter, interior bathroom, or closet). Put as many walls between you and the outside as possible.
Tornadoes most commonly form between 3:00 PM and 9:00 PM due to maximum solar heating and instability, but violent nocturnal tornadoes can strike at any hour during strong cold fronts.
